Societe Generale China received final approval for local incorporation from the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) to set up a wholly foreign owned bank in China on August 4th, 2008.

In 1981 Societe Generale became one of the first international banks to open a representative office in Beijing to anticipate the extraordinary economic development that is now taking place.
 
27 years later, on August 4 2008, Societe Generale (China) Limited received final approval to establish a wholly foreign owned bank in China from the China Banking Regulatory
Commission (CBRC). The new locally incorporated entity is named Societe Generale (China) Limited and is fully owned by its parent, Societe Generale Group. Societe Generale (China) Limited started to operate on September 16 2008.
 
Our network in China is one of the broadest among western-based banks, is present in the country’s principal commercial centres and consists of our branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Hangzhou. In Guangzhou and Wuhan, we were the first foreign bank granted licenses to establish branch offices.
 
As the only French bank that provides retail banking services in China, Societe Generale has launched 8 retail banking outlets in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin, Wuhan and Hangzhou since November 2008. These newly opened retail banking outlets provide a wide range retail banking services in China.
